The short version

High Maintenance Party of Four is a travel site written by Ethan Ross, documenting what it actually costs to travel well — and where the traditional luxury math stops making sense for families who care about food, design, and experience over five-star hotel branding.

The thesis: hotel rooms are where luxury travel gets repriced fastest. A $10,000/night room and a $2,500 apartment with a terrace are often separated by amenities (pool, concierge, room service) that matter more in theory than in practice when you're spending twelve of your twenty-four hours out of the room. The dinners, the boats, the transfers, the access — those are the line items worth spending on.

Affiliate disclosure

This site contains affiliate links. When you click a link to a hotel, tour operator, or booking platform and complete a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. Our affiliate partners include Booking.com (via Skimlinks), GetYourGuide, Viator, Amazon, and Expedia.

Affiliate relationships do not influence our editorial coverage. We recommend what we actually used, booked, and would book again. When we recommend against something — a hotel, a restaurant, a tour format — that recommendation is also honest. Revenue comes from being trusted, not from selling you something you'll regret.

Questions, corrections, or suggestions: the site is a work in progress and genuine factual corrections are welcome. If something is wrong — a restaurant has closed, a price is dramatically out of date, an operator has changed — email is the fastest path to a fix.
